Namibia’s Wild South

12 days / 11 nights

Red Kalahari dunes, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, Fish River Canyon and two nights deep inside the Kgalagadi – the quieter side of southern Namibia.

Who this trip is for

This itinerary is for travellers who want to explore southern Namibia beyond the usual route.

Instead of following the classic Windhoek–Sossusvlei–Swakopmund–Etosha circuit, this journey takes you deep into the south, combining the NamibRand, Lüderitz, Kolmanskop, Fish River Canyon, the Quiver Tree Forest and the Kalahari before crossing into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park for two nights of wildlife.

It is a great option for travellers who enjoy big landscapes, longer scenic drives, quieter places and a mixture of adventure and comfort — with plenty of variety along the way.

Day 2 · NamibRand Nature Reserve

Windhoek → Namibrand

Driving: approximately 370 km | ±5–6 hours·Overnight: NamibRand

Today you’ll leave Windhoek behind and head south into the wide-open landscapes of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

The route takes you away from the busier parts of the country and into one of Namibia’s great desert wilderness areas. The NamibRand is characterised by rolling dunes, open gravel plains, mountain ranges and very little development. It is also recognised as an International Dark Sky Reserve, making the night skies one of the highlights of staying here.

The afternoon is yours to settle in and enjoy the desert surroundings.

  • Breakfast
  • Depart Windhoek
  • Drive south towards the NamibRand
  • Stop along the way as needed
  • Arrive in the NamibRand
  • Settle in and enjoy the surroundings
  • Sundowner or afternoon activity, depending on the lodge

Day 3 · NamibRand Nature Reserve

Exploring The Namibrand

Overnight: NamibRand

Today is all about experiencing the desert rather than simply driving through it.

The NamibRand is a vast private nature reserve where the landscape changes constantly between red dunes, pale gravel plains, rocky mountains and dry riverbeds.

Depending on the activities available at your lodge, you can spend the day exploring the reserve on foot or by vehicle, looking for desert-adapted wildlife and learning more about the plants and animals that survive here.

There is also plenty of time simply to enjoy the surroundings — this is one of those places where the landscape is the main attraction.

  • Breakfast
  • Morning desert activity
  • Explore the NamibRand
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon activity or time to relax
  • Sundowner
  • Dinner

Good to know: The NamibRand is remote by design. There are few roads, very little development and almost no light pollution, which is exactly what makes the area special.

Day 4 · NamibRand → Lüderitz

Namibrand → Lüderitz

Driving: approximately 400 km | ±5–6 hours·Overnight: Lüderitz

Today you’ll leave the NamibRand behind and continue south-west towards the Atlantic coast.

The landscape changes dramatically as you make your way towards Lüderitz — from the inland desert to the stark, wind-shaped landscapes of the Diamond Coast.

It’s a longer driving day, but this is one of those routes where the changing scenery is part of the experience.

  • Breakfast
  • Depart the NamibRand
  • Drive south towards Lüderitz
  • Stop along the way
  • Continue through the desert towards the coast
  • Arrive in Lüderitz
  • Settle in and explore the town

Day 5 · Lüderitz

Lüderitz, Halifax Island & Kolmanskop

Overnight: Lüderitz

Today you’ll experience two of the best-known attractions around Lüderitz, with a combination of coast and history.

Start with a morning marine cruise from the Lüderitz waterfront. Depending on the route and sea conditions, the boat heads towards Diaz Point and Halifax Island, where African penguins can be seen. The waters around Lüderitz are also home to Cape fur seals, seabirds and Heaviside’s dolphins, while whale sightings are possible but never guaranteed. Cruises are weather-dependent.

After returning to town, continue to Kolmanskop, the abandoned diamond-mining town just outside Lüderitz.

Once a thriving German mining settlement, Kolmanskop was eventually abandoned as the diamond industry moved further south. Today, sand has slowly taken over many of the buildings, and guided tours explain the history of the town and the people who once lived there.

  • Early breakfast
  • Morning marine cruise
  • Look out for penguins, seals, dolphins and seabirds
  • Return to Lüderitz
  • Lunch
  • Guided tour of Kolmanskop
  • Return to Lüderitz
  • Dinner

Good to know: The marine cruise is weather-dependent and can be affected by wind and sea conditions. Morning departures are standard, which works well with the Kolmanskop tour afterwards.

Day 6 · Lüderitz → Fish River Canyon

Lüderitz → Fish River Canyon

Driving: approximately 420–430 km | ±5 hours·Overnight: Fish River Canyon

Today you’ll leave the Atlantic behind and head inland towards the Fish River Canyon.

The road follows the B4 through Aus and across the stark southern landscapes before continuing towards the canyon. Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop are connected by the tarred B4, while the route towards the canyon varies depending on the exact lodge you are staying at.

By the time you reach the canyon area, the scenery has changed again — from the coastal desert to rocky plains and rugged canyon country.

  • Breakfast
  • Depart Lüderitz
  • Drive via Aus
  • Continue towards the Fish River Canyon
  • Stop for fuel and lunch along the way
  • Arrive at your lodge
  • Enjoy the views and surrounding landscape

Day 7 · Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

Overnight: Fish River Canyon

Today you’ll have a full day to experience the Fish River Canyon.

The canyon stretches for more than 160 km and is one of southern Namibia’s defining landscapes. Most visitors experience it from the rim and viewpoints, while more adventurous travellers can take part in guided hikes in the surrounding canyon area.

The full Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is a completely different experience — a challenging multi-day hike that descends into the canyon and is only available during the cooler winter months. It is not something to attempt as a casual day hike.

For this itinerary, we’ll keep the experience to a day of exploring, hiking and enjoying the canyon, with the exact walk depending on the lodge and activity available.

  • Breakfast
  • Morning hike or guided walk
  • Explore the canyon viewpoints and surrounding landscape
  • Picnic lunch
  • Continue exploring
  • Time to relax at the lodge
  • Sunset over the canyon

Good to know: If you’d like a more serious hiking experience in the canyon, this can be arranged separately. The full Fish River Canyon Trail is a 4–5 day hike and requires advance planning, permits and medical clearance.

Day 8 · Fish River Canyon → Keetmanshoop

Fish River Canyon → Keetmanshoop

Driving: approximately 170 km | ±2½–3 hours·Overnight: Keetmanshoop

Today is a much shorter driving day, giving you time to explore another small but very distinctive part of southern Namibia.

After breakfast, you’ll head towards Keetmanshoop and the Quiver Tree Forest.

The forest is made up of around 250 naturally occurring quiver trees, some of which are estimated to be several hundred years old. The same property also includes Giant’s Playground, a collection of large dolerite rock formations.

After exploring the area, continue to Keetmanshoop for the night.

  • Breakfast
  • Depart Fish River Canyon
  • Drive towards Keetmanshoop
  • Visit the Quiver Tree Forest
  • Explore Giant’s Playground
  • Continue to Keetmanshoop
  • Settle in
  • Dinner

Good to know: The Quiver Tree Forest is approximately 14 km north-east of Keetmanshoop, so it is an easy addition to this day’s route.

Day 9 · Keetmanshoop → Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Keetmanshoop → Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Driving: approximately 270 km | ±4 hours·Overnight: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Today you’ll head south-east towards the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

You’ll enter the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park through Mata-Mata, crossing the Namibia–South Africa border into the transfrontier park. Kgalagadi is a huge transfrontier conservation area covering parts of Namibia, South Africa and Botswana, with red dunes, dry riverbeds and open Kalahari woodland.

The park is particularly known for its predators and desert-adapted wildlife. Keep an eye out for black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, gemsbok and springbok. All wildlife here is free-roaming, so sightings are never guaranteed.

Once inside the park, the drive itself becomes part of the safari.

  • Breakfast
  • Depart Keetmanshoop
  • Drive south-east towards Mata-Mata
  • Complete border formalities
  • Enter Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
  • Begin your first game drive
  • Arrive at camp
  • Sunset over the Kalahari

Important: The Mata-Mata route is a genuine international border crossing. Your rental vehicle must be authorised for travel into South Africa, and the necessary cross-border documentation needs to be arranged in advance.

Day 10 · Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Full Day In Kgalagadi

Overnight: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring Kgalagadi.

There is no need to rush. The park’s main roads follow the dry Auob and Nossob riverbeds, where animals are naturally drawn to the remaining water sources and the surrounding vegetation.

Spend the day driving between waterholes and keeping an eye out for predators resting beneath the camelthorn trees or watching the riverbeds.

You can either explore independently or arrange a guided morning or sunset drive, depending on availability. Guided drives operate from several of the park’s main camps and require advance checking with the park.

  • Early breakfast
  • Morning game drive
  • Wildlife viewing along the riverbed
  • Picnic lunch
  • Continue exploring the park
  • Optional afternoon or sunset game drive
  • Return to camp

Good to know: Kgalagadi’s roads are gravel and conditions can vary. SANParks recommends high-clearance 4×4 vehicles, and driving after dark inside the park is not permitted.

Day 11 · Kgalagadi → Kalahari

Kgalagadi → Kalahari

Overnight: Kalahari

Today you’ll leave the park through Mata-Mata and return to Namibia before continuing north into the Kalahari.

The landscape remains dominated by red sand, camelthorn trees and wide-open savannah, but the experience changes from a national-park safari to a more intimate Kalahari lodge experience.

This afternoon or the following morning, you’ll spend time with members of a San community, learning about traditional tracking, plants, animal behaviour and the ways people have traditionally survived in this dry environment.

The San experience is an important part of the southern Kalahari story, and several Kalahari lodges offer San-led walks and cultural experiences.

  • Breakfast
  • Final morning game drive, if time allows
  • Exit Kgalagadi through Mata-Mata
  • Complete border formalities
  • Continue north into the Kalahari
  • Arrive at your lodge
  • San cultural experience
  • Sundowner
  • Dinner

Important: When entering or leaving Kgalagadi through the Mata-Mata border facility as an international cross-border traveller, a minimum two-night stay in the park is required. This itinerary has deliberately included two nights inside Kgalagadi to meet that requirement.

Day 12 · Kalahari → Windhoek

Kalahari → Windhoek & Departure

Driving: approximately 250 km | ±3–4 hours, depending on the lodge

Your final morning begins in the Kalahari.

Enjoy breakfast and, if time allows, a short morning activity before starting the drive back towards Windhoek.

The Kalahari experience provides a fitting end to the journey — after travelling through some of southern Namibia’s most dramatic landscapes, you’ll make your way back towards the capital through wide-open desert scenery.

  • Breakfast
  • Optional morning activity
  • Depart the Kalahari
  • Drive towards Windhoek
  • Lunch or fuel stop along the way
  • Arrive in Windhoek
  • Vehicle return
  • Transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport
  • Departure

Good to know: We recommend a late-afternoon or evening international flight on this day. If your flight is earlier, we would add a final night in Windhoek rather than making the airport connection too tight.
